10 unloved alternative datasets
Julia Asri Meigh, Head of ESG and Macro Research (New York)
In honour of Valentine’s Day, we’ve collated 10 datasets that deserve a bit more love from the investment vertical. These lovelorn datasets have failed to win the hearts of data buyers but, in our view, they have some hidden qualities that make them worth another look.
Key takeaways
Plenty more fish in the sea. An increase in private market investors using alternative data is creating a universe of new use cases for datasets that may have been overlooked by quants and public market investors. Datasets that don’t work for hedge funds may still be useful for due diligence or deal sourcing at PE firms.
Left on the shelf. Despite having (in our view) sufficient data characteristics for investors, some datasets still have low uptake. Some are overshadowed by their partners, while are completely overlooked as alternative data vendors.
Not ready for commitment. Some of our unloved datasets simply haven’t been looking – until now. Investors can be demanding and not all providers are prepared to make the commitment needed to make them happy.
