January notebook: Weather reflections + 2023 projections
Daryl Smith, CFA, Head of Research (London)
Greetings,
It’s no icy blast, but by UK standards, it’s been very cold here in London. As a result, I’ve made it a habit to wear my bright green ski jacket to work every day. Call me strange (it happens a lot), but this has led me to think:
a) For a given retailer, how much do cold spells correspond to an increase in warm clothing sales (such as ski jackets)?
b) For a given skier, does experiencing a cold spell where you live mean you’re less likely to take to the slopes that season?
c) For a given shopper, what leads one person to buy a jacket in, say, bright green vs another colour?
For those who care, answers are at the end.
Now back to reality…
