Card data: Solutions and shortcomings for the US grocery sector
Finn Cousins, Research Analyst

In 2023, the US grocery sector was worth an estimated $900bn. The vast majority of these revenues were from direct sales to consumers. Alternative data, particularly transaction data, can provide timely analysis of retailers' sales performance. However, due to the sector's idiosyncrasies, we propose a bespoke approach when considering which transaction products to use.
This report only tracks retailers with groceries as a key revenue line – a sector with significant revenues and divergent share prices. Additionally, we believe some of the sector’s quirks could compel a more bespoke approach to transaction data. For example, key players in the US grocery market have large non-grocery product lines. Analysing how these merchandise sales complement grocery sales is imperative to understanding these retailers.
